Müsellim Mosque

Müsellim Camii

Overview
Müsellim Mosque Müsellim Mosque is one of the important Ottoman-era landmarks reflecting the historical texture of Antalya. Located in the Elmalı Neighborhood of Muratpaşa district, the mosque was built in the late 18th century and stands as one of the city’s significant religious structures with its historical and architectural value. Due to its close proximity to Kaleiçi and Antalya city center, it attracts both local and international visitors interested in history and culture. History According to its inscription, Müsellim Mosque was commissioned in 1796 by Hacı Mehmed Ağa, the son of Hacı Osman Ağa. Since Hacı Mehmed Ağa served as the “Mütesellim” (provincial governor/administrator) of the Teke Sanjak during the Ottoman period, the mosque became popularly known as “Müsellim Mosque.” The Tekelioğlu family, to which he belonged, played an influential role in the administration of Antalya and its surrounding regions for many years. Architectural Features As a fine example of Ottoman architecture, the mosque features a simple yet elegant design with a square plan and a large central dome. The interior is adorned with traditional hand-drawn decorations and wooden ornaments reflecting the artistic style of the period. Stone, wood, and decorative details are harmoniously combined throughout the structure. The traditional motifs found inside the mosque are considered valuable examples in terms of art history. Library and Cultural Importance Adjacent to the mosque is a historic library building that once served as a vakıf (foundation) library and housed hundreds of valuable manuscripts and books. Historical records indicate that approximately 589 volumes belonged to the mosque’s foundation collection. Today, the structure continues to represent an important part of Antalya’s cultural heritage. Restoration Works Müsellim Mosque has undergone several restorations throughout its history. Restoration and preservation works were carried out by the General Directorate of Foundations during the years 1862–1863, 1907, 1952–1955, and 1989–1992. Most recently, comprehensive renovation and maintenance works were completed in 2021 to preserve the mosque’s original architectural character. Müsellim Mosque Today Today, Müsellim Mosque remains open for worship and continues to be an important spiritual center, especially during the month of Ramadan. With its historical atmosphere, peaceful courtyard, and Ottoman architectural heritage, the mosque holds a special place among Antalya’s cultural and religious landmarks. It is considered one of the must-see historical sites for visitors exploring Antalya’s rich history and culture.
